Mad-Lib Excerpt, Western Style

I’m working on a new western series for next year and the first book in this series is giving me fits–second book, not so much, mostly due to a hero who is delightfully bad. He’s a secondary character in the first book, and behaving badly, stealing scenes and other such shenanigans. I figured I’d let him out to play and share my scatter-process of writing–a first draft of any paragraph is a scatter-shot riddled with holes. So here’s a snippet from the new series–thought it’d be fun to see how y’all would fill in the blanks.

:cowboy:

Fill in the seven blanks—*can* be more than one word.

Gabriel Quaid crouched beside the entwined couple________________ beneath the low shelter. He hated to ______________ them, and wished to hell he had one of those picture cameras. He’d sell his _________________ for a still frame of Lake holding the fair-haired white woman like ___________________. Hell, he’d ride ________________ to possess such torment. Laughter escaped his throat at the mere thought.

Eyes dark as demon coal sprang open, Lake pinning him without moving another muscle. Quaid grinned so wide it hurt.

“Easy, pardner,” he whispered. “I wouldn’t make any sudden moves if I were you. Then again, if I’s holding that ________________, I’d be doing my damnedest to _________________ while I could.”

Gonna give away three copies of MOUNTAIN WILD throughout the day—all ya gotta do is play ;-)

What a great idea for a blog, Stacey. So many versatile ideas that might get the spark growing brighter and brighter. I’d have added my comments, but I am an innocent and never think about those kinds of things

See you later over at the kissing booth.

  65. Deidre:

Gabriel Quaid crouched beside the entwined couple lounging mellow-like beneath the low shelter. He hated to ask a favor of them, and wished to hell he had one of those picture cameras. He’d sell his Yosemite Sam alarm clock for a still frame of Lake holding the fair-haired white woman like a sack of taters. Hell, he’d ride bareback on a porcupine to possess such torment.

Then again, if I’s holding that bottle of sauce, I’d be doing my damnedest to drink up while I could.”

    lol, that was fun!

  74. Sharon K:

    Hi,
just wondering what happened to my post and the 3 that posted before me. We all posted before 9:00 AM on the 27th and showed her then, but do not show here any more. Did we do something wrong? Don’t want to make the same mistake again and miss out on the fun.

  75. Colleen:

    Congrats to the winners!!!! :rose:

  76. Stacey Kayne:

Hi Sharon! I’m really sorry–it wasn’t anything you did—shortly after I posted my blog, the site had a glitch and within the first hour the site admin had to delete my post and repost it. I had gone to bed for a few hours sleep and when I woke up (check out reply #14) I had no idea whose or how many replies were lost from that first hour. Sorry yours was among the four or five that were lost.

If you’d like to send me your mailing address, I’d be glad to send ya something for being among the causalities. :D staceykayne@gmail.com

  77. Stacey Kayne:

Hey Jennifer and Heather :waving: Glad you enjoyed the game! It was such a spur-of-the-moment idea (last-minute panic, really :excited: ), I wasn’t sure how it’d go over or if anyone would want to play–definitely gonna have to do this one again sometime :fun:
